Freedom Energy’s Administrative Role in Group Net Metering

Dayna Wilkins, Accounts Payable Manager, discusses Freedom Energy’s administrative role in Group Net Metering (GNM). She highlights how the program benefits both renewable energy generators (Hosts) and electric utility account holders (Members), ultimately promoting renewable energy and reducing electric supply costs.

Group Net Metering (GNM) offers significant advantages to consumers and propels the renewable energy sector forward. As an innovative program, GNM allows consumers to benefit from the electricity generated by renewable energy sources (such as hydro or solar) even if those sources are not located on their property. In 2013, New Hampshire Senate Bill 98 established GNM, allowing renewable energy facilities such as solar, hydro, and landfill gas (known as Hosts) to partner with electric utility account holders (Members) and receive the utility supply rate for their generation. To participate, a renewable energy generator must have Members whose usage equals or exceeds their generation. The Host benefits by receiving the utility supply rate for their generation, as opposed to the lower wholesale cost of power. Members are compensated by the Host for enrolling their accounts in the program, without needing to change their electric service or being prohibited from third-party supply contracts.

Freedom Energy Logistics, as the administrator of GNM programs, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and manages the allocation of kilowatts generated from GNM hosts to members. This involves verifying that each member meets eligibility criteria, which can vary based on asset size or the amount of energy generated by the GNM host. Once enrolled, Freedom Energy processes and manages the program, issuing quality GNM rebates to members to ensure they receive financial benefits. With nearly 200 member accounts and over 20 GNM hosts, with more in the process, Freedom Energy is committed to facilitating the growth and success of GNM programs.

Benefits of Participating in Group Net Metering

  1. Cost Savings: Participants may reduce their electricity bills by using the credits earned from the excess energy generated by their renewable energy systems.
  2. Environmental Impact: By supporting renewable energy, GNM participants contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Energy Independence: GNM encourages the adoption of renewable energy sources, promoting energy independence and resilience.
  4. Community Support: GNM programs often support local renewable energy projects, fostering community development and sustainability.

GNM represents a significant step forward in promoting renewable energy and empowering consumers. Through diligent administration, participants can confidently navigate GNM program complexities and enjoy potential cost savings and environmental sustainability.
