Demand Response Programs: A New Revenue Opportunity for Hospitals in ERCOT

Demand response programs offer hospitals in ERCOT an opportunity to reduce energy costs, support grid reliability, and generate additional annual revenue by strategically reducing electricity use during peak demand events.

As electricity costs continue to rise across the ERCOT market, hospitals have an opportunity to reduce overall energy expenses beyond simply managing their third-party supply costs. One often overlooked strategy is participation in a Demand Response Program.

Demand response programs are designed to help maintain grid reliability during periods of extreme demand, typically driven by severe weather conditions. Through these programs, ERCOT compensates participating organizations for being available to reduce their electricity consumption when grid imbalances occur.

The benefit to ERCOT is significant. By maintaining a network of participants that can quickly reduce load or operate onsite generation, ERCOT gains additional resources to help stabilize the grid during peak demand events.

Hospitals are uniquely positioned to benefit from demand response programs because they typically have:

  • Large electrical loads
  • Emergency backup generators already in place
  • Building automation systems capable of managing load reductions
  • The ability to curtail non-essential electrical consumption with minimal operational impact

In many cases, hospitals can participate with little disruption to patient care while generating an additional source of revenue.

Another major advantage is that participants receive ongoing support from specialized third-party demand response providers at no cost. These providers monitor ERCOT load forecasts, weather conditions, historical peak demand trends, and real-time grid activity to help identify potential demand response events well in advance. This allows facilities to prepare and respond effectively when called upon.

Hospitals that commit to participating during the four annual coincident peak events can typically earn between $12,500 and $100,000 per year, depending on their facility size, available curtailment capacity, and program participation level.

For hospitals seeking to offset rising energy costs, demand response programs can provide a unique combination of operational flexibility, grid support, and meaningful financial rewards.

Key Benefits

  • Generate additional revenue from existing backup generation assets.
  • Offset rising electricity costs.
  • Enhance energy management and operational efficiency.
  • Support grid reliability during periods of peak demand.
  • Receive expert forecasting and event management support at no cost.
