We are very near the end of the 4-month PJM Coincident Peak period which runs from June 1 through September 30.  In June and July we sent notifications identifying nine days that could potentially result in a 5-coincident peak.  The first was on June 11, and the last on July 16.  As of this summary, there have been no additional days with forecasted or actual load that exceeded the 5 peaks identified to date.  In the past 10 years the latest peak established was on September 6, 2023.  With less than two weeks left of the 4-month period, and the highest load forecasted through September 23 at 129,093 MW, the likelihood for a new peak to be established is very minimal.

Notable Statistics Regarding the Nine Peak Alert Notification Days

  • All nine days exceeded the lowest peak in the past 10 years
  • Two days, July 1st and 2nd exceeded the highest peak in the past 10 years
  • Three days exceeded PJM’s Summer 2026 Peak Forecast
  • Each of the five peaks to date occurred at Hour Ending 6 PM
  • July 2 is currently the highest peak to date through September 16th

The chart below depicts the forecasted load and actual results on the nine alert days.

The goal is to identify the 5-coincident peaks with minimal notices and capture not only the highest, but the 4 peaks below the highest.  Although some of the earlier peaks were subsequently replaced by higher peaks, historical data necessitates sending alerts on those days.

Historical 5-Coincident Peak Information 2016 – 2025

The 5-coincident peaks can only be established from June 1 through September 30 on non-holiday weekdays only.  Historically during the past 10 years representing 50 coincident peaks (5 each year), half have occurred in July.

  • Highest Peak  – 160,154 MW on June 23, 2025  *(Surpassed on July 1st and 2nd this year)
  • Lowest Peak  – 137,757 MW on July 5, 2023
  • Earliest Peak – June 12, 2017 (140,955 MW)
  • Latest Peak – September 6, 2023 (141,355 MW)

Results presented to date are based on available metered load data and preliminary analyses. Final outcomes may change when PJM completes its official review and publishes the final five Coincident Peak (5CP) hours for the planning year. Any comparisons, rankings, or estimated peak-day impacts should therefore be considered preliminary until PJM's final peak determinations are released.
